Drone Mapping - Cutting Edge Science and Technology - Race for Water
Published on by Elsa Mabillard in Technology
Initiated by the Race for Water Foundation based in Switzerland, the “Race for Water Odyssey” is a unique sailing expedition that aims to draw up the first global assessment of plastic pollution in the ocean by visiting island beaches situated in the 5 trash vortexes. In less than 300 days, over 40,000 nautical miles will be traveled, punctuated by 11 scientific stopovers and 9 outreach stopovers, involving a total of 13 countries. See the video below for an overview of the project.
The eBee drone system, built by the Swiss company senseFly, will be used during the expedition for two purposes: to allow Duke University and Oregon State University to test it’s ability to assess the macro-trash that is present on the shores, and to create an initial overview of the innovative technology’s capabilities, in order to further explore unmapped territories. See the video below to see how easy it is to fly the senseFly eBee. Don’t forget to check out the data we are collecting with the eBee too!
The Race for Water Odyssey is supported through a broad coalition of international agencies, businesses and academic institutions including Duke University, Oregon State University, senseFly, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the International Sailing Federation, the United Nations Environment Program, Swissnex and Swisscom.
